ABOUT

Participants are invited to create innovative apps based on open data sets.
We envisage 3 thematical challenges:

  • TRANSPORTATION:
  • New services in B2B and B2G based on spatial and transportation data sets.
  • Optimize transportation flows in the city (Jelgava) based on sensor data. Generate automatic notifications for the intensity of traffic on an interactive tab outside the city to motivate to choose a road. How to help day-to-day dispatchers to supervise the urban infrastructure and to automate a particular process.
  • How to fuse data on public transportation stops and schedules into existing or new apps and services? Can we enhance OpenStreetMap with open data…
  •

  • CULTURE:
  • New services based on museum, state archive and cultural heritage data sets.
  • Build new thematic digital stories, gamify education and tourism, build new learning-teaching materials…
  •

  • REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT and TOURISM:
  • New capabilities for regional planning  and tourism based on open data sets.
  • What insights can be derived from network event data provided by Latvijas Mobilais Telefons?
  • Participants may choose other thematic challenges, participants should not limit their projects to one thematic direction only.

What data sets will be available?

    What tools will be available?

Participants are not limited to using any specific data processing tool or technology. We expect participants to bring their PCs (and other relevant devices for app development and showcasing) complete with the software stack of their choice.

Given the time constraints of this event, we encourage participants to prepare development environment and become comfortable with their choice of software before coming to the event.

We advocate fair use of technology and expect participants to obey any relevant copyright rules for the technology used during event.

As a complimentary option, eazyBI data visualization tool will be provided free of charge for participants.

    Expected results

At the end of the event, we expect participants to pitch a prototype for original, innovative mobile or web application bringing value to society or a specific group of users.

Following evaluation criteria will be used by jury:

  • Open data: application is built using open data, it is original and innovative, not yet available in the market, providing specific, identified benefit for society or specified sub-group of users.
  • Technical implementation: application is built using open standards and state of the art technologies. We recommend that you publish the code as an open source. Publication of an open source is optional, but a higher rating will be for a project whose code will be published as an open source.
  • Business sustainability: application can financially sustain itself under market conditions, being independent from incremental grants or similar regulated financing.
  • Representatives of LATA, organizing committee, supporting organizations and event mentors will participate in the jury.
